Lip Augmentation with Hyaluronic Acid (Lip Correction)
Harmoniously curved and full lips are considered a symbol of sensuality and youth. Whether due to genetics or caused by the natural aging process and loss of volume, lips can be quite thin or become narrower over time. This often makes facial features appear stern, and those affected frequently feel they look older than they actually are or than they feel. Minimally invasive lip correction restores volume and a youthful appearance to the lips. This procedure involves injecting hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the body, resulting in a particularly natural-looking outcome.
Reasons for lip correction
Every person is characterized by their own unique physical features. Consequently, there are natural variations in the shape and size of lips. For individuals who perceive their lips as too narrow or uneven, lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid offers a well-tolerated, non-surgical correction option in aesthetic medicine. In addition to naturally thin lips, it is also possible for lip volume to decrease with age. Lip augmentation is therefore suitable for women and men of various age groups. It is important that the desire for fuller lips comes from the patient themselves and that they do not wish to undergo lip augmentation for someone else or simply because of a beauty trend.

Preparing for lip augmentation
For optimal results with lip augmentation, pre- and post-treatment care are just as crucial as the injection itself. To minimize the risk of bruising at the injection sites on the face, patients should avoid taking blood-thinning medications (e.g., aspirin) for about two weeks prior to the procedure. In addition, intense sunbathing and the consumption of nicotine and alcohol should be avoided. Prior to the lip augmentation, a personal, detailed consultation takes place, during which the doctor thoroughly informs the patient about the treatment procedure, pre- and post-treatment care, and the potential risks of lip augmentation. Patients also have the opportunity to address their questions and requests regarding lip augmentation directly to the expert.
Materials used for lip augmentation
At the Dr. Bravin-Jumpertz practice, only fully biodegradable substances are used for lip injections. The use of hyaluronic acid ensures a particularly healthy and natural result, keeping the lips soft and supple. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally produced by the body that, among other things, ensures the skin’s firmness and elasticity. Thanks to its ability to bind large amounts of moisture, it is ideal for safely increasing volume. Hyaluronic acid is also very popular in wrinkle treatment as a so-called hyaluronic filler.

Questions and Answers
In theory, lip augmentation can also be performed using permanent fillers. These products contain synthetic components (e.g., silicone) that are not broken down by the body. They remain in the tissue, resulting in a permanent increase in volume. However, the risks of adverse tissue changes and health complications are difficult to assess. Even years after lip augmentation, complications such as rejection reactions can occur. For this reason, reputable doctors specializing in aesthetic treatments generally advise against the use of artificial substances.
Before-and-after photos of lip augmentation provide a good initial impression of the results that can be achieved with the treatment. Unfortunately, such photo comparisons are not permitted to be published in Germany. Interested patients have the opportunity to view before-and-after photos of lip augmentation during an individual consultation.
Depending on the initial condition and the desired result, lip augmentation may involve treating only the lower lip or only the upper lip, or both lips may be corrected simultaneously. First, the doctor numbs the relevant areas using local anesthesia. To minimize the risk of infection, the areas are also cleaned and disinfected. Subsequently, several small deposits of hyaluronic acid are injected directly under the skin at minute intervals using a fine needle, giving the lip the desired volume and a clear contour. As a result of the lip correction, the lips appear fuller, more youthful, and more sensual.
After lip augmentation, patients are generally able to resume social activities immediately. Based on experience, mild redness, swelling, and bruising subside within a few hours. By two days at the latest, there are usually no visible traces of the treatment. The healing process can be further supported by regular cooling.
Patients should avoid irritating the treated area with makeup or skincare products for about twelve hours. Furthermore, physically strenuous activities should be avoided for two days, and intense sunbathing for one to two weeks.
Minimally invasive lip augmentation using injection treatments is generally considered a method of lip correction with extremely low risks and side effects. Since hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in the body, the treatment is very well tolerated. If in doubt, tolerance to the products used and to the anesthesia can be tested. In some cases, mild redness and swelling may occur after lip augmentation. Hematomas are rare. Asymmetry and the formation of nodules are also among the very rare complications following lip injections. Choosing a specially trained and experienced physician reduces the risk of complications to a minimum.
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid is considered a safe aesthetic treatment with a low risk of complications. In some cases, however, the procedure is not recommended to rule out potential risks. These contraindications include:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Autoimmune diseases
- Inflammation and skin infections (e.g., herpes)
- Allergies to the materials used
- An increased tendency to bleed
Over time, the body breaks down the hyaluronic acid. This process is completely natural. Once the hyaluronic acid injected during lip augmentation has been fully metabolized, the results of the treatment will fade. The exact duration of a lip augmentation varies from patient to patient. Generally, the effect of a lip augmentation lasts about six months, and in some cases even up to 12 months. If desired, the lip augmentation can be repeated once the body has completely broken down the hyaluronic acid to refresh the results.
Other options – surgical lip augmentation
Lip augmentation can also be performed surgically. During a lip lift, the aesthetic plastic surgeon removes a small strip of tissue between the nose and mouth. This lifts the upper lip and makes more of the lip’s natural color visible, giving the upper lip a fuller appearance. However, there is no actual increase in volume. The volume of the lips can only be increased through injections.
